چکیده

Whereas the spatial discriminative capacities of vision have been mapped out in some detail, virtually nothing is known about tactile spatial sensitivity aside from two-point resolution, point localization, and size discrimination. The purpose here was to assess several spatial discriminative capacities of the distal pad of the index finger: discrimination of spatial misalignment, spatial interval discrimination, point localization, and spatial resolution. It was found in some cases that judgments of relative spatial position are remarkably acute-the thresholds for spatial interval discrimination and for detection of misalignment in a three-dot target were less than one-fifth the two-point threshold. The threshold for point localization, determined under what were deemed optimal conditions, was approximately 0.17 mm. These results indicate that under some conditions touch is capable of spatial discriminations nearly as acute as those made by vision, as judged by scaling the discrimination thresholds in terms of the respective resolution thresholds.

Design and Modeling of a New Type of Tactile Sensor Based on the Deformation of an Elastic Membrane

This paper presents the design and modeling of a flexible tactile sensor, capable of detecting the 2D surface texture image, contact-force estimation and stiffness of the sensed object. The sensor is made of polymer materials. It consists of a cylindrical chamber for pneumatic actuation and a membrane with a mesa structure. The inner radius of the cylindrical chamber is 2cm and its outer radius...

Somatovisceral interactions in the rat dorsal column nuclei

Recent studies have revealed that noxious visceral inputs travel in the dorsal column pathway, and interactions between colorectal noxious and tactile inputs occur in the ventrobasal thalamus. This investigation was to test whether the somatovisceral interactions also take place in the dorsal column nuclei (DCN). Forty-five single DCN neurons of anesthetized rats responsive to colorectal disten...

Effects of Vestibular and Tactile Stimulation on Behavioral Disorders due to Sensory Processing Deficiency in 3-13 Years Old Iranian Autistic Children

Objectives: Among the most important problems of autistic children are the behavioral disorders due to sensory processing deficiency, which are typically reflected in behaviors such as impulsivity, attention and concentration disorders, undesirable emotional reactions, sensory seeking in the form of stereotype behaviors, self-injury and self-stimulating. The present study aimed at exploring the...

Modeling of Tactile Detection of an Artery in a Soft Tissue by Finite Element Analysis

Nowadays, one of the main problems encountered in minimally invasive surgery and telesurgery is the detection of arteries in tissue. In this study, for the first time, tactile detection of an artery in tissue and distinguishing it from the tumor has been modeled by finite element method. In this modeling, three 2D models of tissue have been created: tissue, tissue including a tumor, and tissue ...
